"Chromecast" has meant several different products over the years, and that causes a lot of confusion in our support chats. Some customers have a small dongle with no remote that can only receive video cast from a phone. Others have a Chromecast with Google TV, Google's newer streaming box, or a TV from Sony, TCL, Hisense, or another brand with Google TV built in. The second group can install IPTV players directly, which is the best experience. The first group can still watch, but through a phone or computer. Start by working out which one you have.

Which Device Do You Have?

  • It came with a remote and shows a home screen with rows of apps and a "For you" tab: it runs Google TV (or the older Android TV). You can install players from the Google Play Store. Follow the steps from Before you start.
  • It is a small dongle with no remote, and you control it only from your phone: it is a cast-only Chromecast. It cannot install apps. Skip to using your phone.
  • It is a TV with Google TV built in: treat it exactly like a Google TV device. The Android section of our Smart TV installation page also applies.

Google TV is built on Android TV, so most of what works on an Android TV box works here too. Our Android installation guide covers phones and boxes in general.

Before You Start

  • Update the device. System updates are usually under Settings > System > About; menu names vary by device and software version.
  • Check storage. Some Google TV dongles have limited space. Uninstall apps you do not use before adding a player.
  • Have your login ready: an Xtream Codes login or an M3U link. See M3U vs Xtream Codes if you are unsure which you have.
  • Prefer a wired connection for 4K. Some Google TV devices have an Ethernet port; dongles generally need a USB-C hub or adapter with Ethernet.

Step 1: Install a Player from Google Play

  1. From the home screen, open the Apps tab or use Search (you can also press the microphone button on the remote and say the app name).
  2. Search for the player you want. The two our customers use most on Google TV are TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro. Listings can vary by region and device, so check what your Play Store shows.
  3. Open the app page, confirm the developer name, and select Install.
  4. Open the app when the install finishes.

Not sure which of the two to choose? Our side-by-side TiviMate vs IPTV Smarters Pro comparison explains the differences in interface, guide, and features.

Step 2: Add Your Login

In TiviMate

Choose to add a playlist, select Xtream Codes, and enter the server address, username, and password. Name the playlist and finish. The guide normally loads with it. The full walkthrough, including catch-up, is in our TiviMate setup guide.

In IPTV Smarters Pro

Choose the Xtream Codes login option (labels vary by version), enter a profile name, the server address with http:// and port if provided, then your username and password. Wait for the categories to load. Our guide to activating IPTV Smarters Pro covers the steps after ordering.

Typing tip

The on-screen keyboard is slow with a remote. Many Google TV devices can be controlled from the Google TV remote feature on an Android or iPhone, which lets you type with the phone's keyboard. If any error appears, check our Xtream Codes and M3U error checklist.

Step 3: Tune the Player

  • Decoder: if channels show a black screen or stutter, switch between hardware and software decoding in the player's playback settings. Hardware is usually better on Google TV, but test both.
  • Guide refresh: set the EPG to update daily, and refresh it manually if it looks empty. Our EPG troubleshooting guide has app-specific steps.
  • Stream quality: if FHD or 4K versions stall in the evening, try the HD version of the channel.
  • Display settings: some Google TV devices offer a frame rate or resolution matching option in their display settings. It can make live sports look smoother; menu names vary.

If a Player Is Not in the Play Store

Most customers never need this, but if a player you trust is not listed for your device, Google TV allows installing apps from outside the store after a permission change:

  1. Enable developer options. On most devices, go to Settings > System > About, highlight the Android TV OS build entry, and press Select about seven times until a message confirms it.
  2. Install a file manager or downloader app from the Play Store.
  3. Allow that app to install unknown apps (usually under Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions; menu names vary).
  4. Download the player only from its developer's official website, install it, then delete the installer file to save space.
  5. Turn the unknown-sources permission off again when you are done.

Never install an app from a link sent by a stranger or from a site that bundles "preloaded" content. A plain player that you add your own login to is all you need.

Cast-Only Chromecast: Using Your Phone

A Chromecast without a remote cannot run an IPTV app itself. You have two options:

  1. Cast from a player that supports it. Some Android and iPhone IPTV players include a cast button. Start the stream in the player, tap the cast icon, and choose your Chromecast. The Chromecast then pulls the stream directly, so your phone is free.
  2. Mirror your screen. On many Android phones, the Google Home app or the quick settings panel can mirror the whole screen. This works with any player but is less steady and uses more battery.

Keep the phone and Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network. If you use IPTV every day, a Google TV device is an inexpensive upgrade that removes the phone from the chain. The same logic applies to other TVs; see our honest guide to IPTV on Roku, where casting is also the main option.

Keep a Google TV Device Running Smoothly

  • Clear the player's cache every few weeks (usually Settings > Apps, select the app, then Clear cache).
  • Restart weekly. A restart is usually under Settings > System > Restart.
  • Watch the Wi-Fi signal. A dongle behind the TV gets weaker reception; an HDMI extender or Ethernet adapter helps. See our internet speed guide and buffering fixes.
  • Use the original power adapter. TV USB ports often cannot power a streaming device reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Chromecast and Google TV for IPTV?

Older Chromecast dongles without a remote are cast-only: they cannot install apps, so you play IPTV on a phone or computer and cast it to the TV. Devices that run Google TV, such as Chromecast with Google TV, Google's newer streaming box, and many Sony, TCL, and Hisense TVs, have their own app store and remote, so you install a player directly on them.

Can I install TiviMate on Google TV?

Yes, TiviMate is built for Android TV and Google TV devices, and it is normally available in the Google Play Store on those devices. Store listings can vary by region and device. Some TiviMate features require a paid upgrade sold by the developer, separate from your IPTV subscription.

Do I need to sideload an IPTV app on Google TV?

Usually not. Popular players are generally available in the Play Store on Google TV. Sideloading is only needed if a player you trust is not listed there. If you do sideload, download only from the developer's official website and turn the unknown-sources permission off again afterward.

Why does my Chromecast with Google TV run out of storage?

Some Google TV dongles have limited internal storage, and streaming apps build up cache over time. Clear the cache of your IPTV player in the app settings, uninstall apps you do not use, and avoid keeping large installer files. A full device often causes crashes and a guide that stops updating.

Is casting from my phone good enough for everyday IPTV?

It works, but a player installed on a Google TV device is usually steadier. When you cast or mirror, your phone has to stay connected and awake, and screen mirroring re-encodes the video, which can reduce quality. Not every IPTV player supports casting either, so check the app first.

How many devices can use my login on Google TV and my phone?

The login itself can be saved on as many devices as you like, but only your plan's number of screens can play at the same moment: one on Essential and Premium, two on Supreme. Stop playback on one device before starting another on a one-screen plan.
