Many of our customers already live in the Apple world: an iPhone in the pocket, an iPad on the couch, and an Apple TV under the television. The good news is that IPTV fits in neatly. Apple TV boxes have strong processors and good Wi-Fi, they get software updates for years, and the interface is quick even with a large channel list. The main thing to understand is that Apple TV is a closed platform, so you can only use players that are available in the App Store in your country. This guide explains how to pick one and get it running.

IPTV on Apple TV: What to Expect

Apple TV runs tvOS. Every app comes from the Apple TV App Store, and there is no sideloading option for everyday users. That has a few practical effects:

  • Player choice depends on your region. The App Store lists different apps in different countries, and apps come and go. Some iPhone players also have an Apple TV version; others do not.
  • No TiviMate. TiviMate is an Android TV app. If you want it specifically, see IPTV on Google TV and Chromecast. For a broader look at the two big players, read TiviMate vs IPTV Smarters Pro.
  • Your login is portable. The same Xtream Codes details or M3U link work on your Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. Our iPhone and iPad installation guide covers the mobile side.

Before You Start

  • Update tvOS. The option is usually under Settings > System > Software Updates. Menu names can change between tvOS versions.
  • Sign in to the App Store with your Apple account on the Apple TV.
  • Keep your iPhone nearby. It makes typing the login much easier (more on that below).
  • Check the connection. Some Apple TV models have an Ethernet port; if yours does, use it. Otherwise, connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Have your login details open, exactly as we sent them. Not sure which format you have? See M3U vs Xtream Codes.

Step 1: Choose a tvOS Player

We do not make the player; you choose one from the App Store and add your login to it. When comparing players on Apple TV, check these points on the app's App Store page:

  1. Apple TV support. The page should show that the app runs on Apple TV, not only on iPhone and iPad.
  2. Login types. Look for Xtream Codes (also called Xtream API) support, M3U playlist support, or both.
  3. TV guide support. Most players load the guide automatically with an Xtream Codes login; with M3U, you may need to add an EPG link.
  4. Pricing. Many players are free to install with paid features or a subscription sold by the developer. That cost is separate from your IPTV plan and can change, so check the current terms in the store.

Search for well-known names such as IPTV Smarters Pro first. Availability on Apple TV varies by country, so if it is not listed in your region, choose another established player that meets the points above. Avoid apps with no clear developer information.

Step 2: Install from the App Store

  1. Open the App Store on the Apple TV home screen.
  2. Go to Search and type the player name, or use the Siri Remote's microphone button to dictate it.
  3. Open the app page and choose Get (or the price button).
  4. Confirm with your Apple account if asked, then open the app when the download finishes.
  5. Optional: move the app to the top row of the home screen for quick access. Hold the touch surface or clickpad on the icon until it wiggles, then move it.

Step 3: Add Your Login

Type it on your iPhone

When a text field is active on the Apple TV, an iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network and signed in to the same Apple account usually shows a keyboard notification. Tap it and type on the phone. You can also paste the details you copied from our message, which is the most reliable way to avoid typos.

Xtream Codes login

  1. Choose the Xtream Codes or "add user" option in the player.
  2. Enter a profile name of your choice.
  3. Enter the server address including http:// and the port if one was provided.
  4. Enter your username and password; both are case-sensitive.
  5. Save and wait for the categories to load.

M3U playlist

Choose the playlist or M3U option and paste the full link. Some players also accept a separate EPG (XMLTV) link for the TV guide; add it if we supplied one. If the login fails, our Xtream Codes and M3U error checklist lists the usual causes.

Step 4: Apple TV Settings That Help

Match content

Under Settings > Video and Audio there is usually a match content section with options for dynamic range and frame rate. Turning frame rate matching on often makes live sports look smoother, because the TV switches to the stream's native rate. The screen blanks for a moment while it switches; that is expected.

Format

If your TV is not 4K or HDR, set the output format to match the TV rather than forcing 4K. A mismatch can cause a black screen or washed-out colors in some streams.

Restart properly

Apple TV rarely needs it, but a real restart (usually Settings > System > Restart) clears stuck apps. Closing the app from the app switcher (double-press the TV or Home button) is a good first step.

Network

Check the signal under Settings > Network. If streams buffer, try Ethernet where available, move to 5 GHz, and see our internet speed guide for IPTV and the guide to fixing buffering.

Using AirPlay from iPhone or iPad

AirPlay lets you send video from an iPhone or iPad player to the Apple TV. It is handy for a quick test, or if the player you prefer exists only on iPhone. To use it, keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, start playback on the phone, and tap the AirPlay icon in the player (or use Screen Mirroring from Control Center).

For regular viewing, a player installed on the Apple TV itself is the better choice. With AirPlay, the phone has to stay awake and connected, mirroring adds a delay, and a phone call or notification can interrupt the picture. Also remember that the phone and the Apple TV count as one stream when mirroring, but as two screens if both play separately; our guide to screens and connections explains the difference.

When to Contact Support

Send us the Apple TV model and tvOS version (both are in the About screen in the general settings), the player you use, and a photo of any error message. Tell us whether the same login works on your iPhone; that quickly separates an account issue from a device issue.

Watching on other screens too? See our guides for Samsung Smart TVs and LG Smart TVs. If you are wondering about a Roku in another room, read Can you use IPTV on Roku? for an honest look at the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which IPTV app works on Apple TV?

Apple TV installs apps only from its own App Store, and the IPTV players listed there vary by country and change over time. Search the App Store on the Apple TV itself for a player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists, and read the description to confirm it supports Apple TV, not only iPhone. If IPTV Smarters Pro is not listed in your region, choose another established player with the same login options.

Can I install TiviMate on Apple TV?

No. TiviMate is made for Android-based TV devices such as Android TV, Google TV, and Fire TV. It does not run on tvOS. On Apple TV, use a tvOS player from the App Store that accepts your login type.

Is it better to AirPlay from my iPhone or use an app on the Apple TV?

An app installed on the Apple TV is usually better. The Apple TV then pulls the stream directly from the internet, which is steadier and frees your phone. AirPlay is useful for a quick test or for a player that only exists on iPhone, but it depends on both devices staying on the same Wi-Fi network.

How do I type my password more easily on Apple TV?

When a text field is open on the Apple TV, an iPhone signed in to the same Apple account and on the same network can usually show a keyboard notification. Tap it and type on the phone. This avoids most of the typos that cause login errors with the Siri Remote.

Why does the picture flicker when I start a channel?

If the Apple TV is set to match the content's frame rate or dynamic range, the TV briefly blanks while it switches modes. This is normal. If it bothers you, you can change the match content options in the video and audio settings.

Can my Apple TV and iPhone share one subscription?

Yes, the same login works on both. How many can play at the same time depends on your plan: one screen on Essential and Premium, two on Supreme. On a one-screen plan, stop playback on the phone before starting on the Apple TV.
