How the IPTV TV Guide Works
EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide: the grid that shows what is on now, what is on next, and what aired earlier. On cable, the guide arrives with the signal. With IPTV, it is a separate file, usually in a format called XMLTV, that your app downloads and then matches to your channels.
That process has three parts, and an empty guide means one of them failed:
- The app needs an EPG address. With an Xtream Codes login, most apps find it automatically. With an M3U playlist, the address is sometimes included inside the playlist and sometimes has to be added by hand.
- The app has to download the guide file. Guide files can be large. On a slow connection or a low-memory device, the download can fail or take several minutes.
- The app matches guide data to channels. Each channel in the playlist carries an ID. When the ID matches an entry in the guide file, the listings appear. When it does not, that channel shows no information.
Knowing which part failed tells you what to fix. If the whole guide is empty, look at parts 1 and 2. If the guide works for most channels but not a few, it is part 3. If the guide is there but shifted by an hour or more, it is a time setting.
Quick Fixes to Try First
- Wait a few minutes after the first login. On a fresh setup, channels load first and the guide follows. Give it five minutes before changing anything.
- Refresh or update the EPG manually. Most apps have an option to update or reload the guide in their settings. Run it once and let it finish.
- Restart the app and the device. A full restart clears a download that got stuck halfway.
- Check the device date and time. A wrong system clock can make the app think the guide data is old or not yet valid. Set the date and time to automatic.
- Clear the app cache. An old, corrupted guide file can block new updates. Clear the cache (not the data) in the device's app settings, then refresh the EPG again.
Add or Check the EPG Address
If you signed in with an M3U link and the guide is completely empty, the app may simply not know where to find the guide. Your welcome message includes an EPG address alongside your playlist details. Add it in your app's EPG or TV guide settings:
- Open the app's settings and find the section called EPG, TV Guide, or Program Guide (menu names vary between apps and versions).
- Choose the option to add an EPG source or EPG URL.
- Paste the EPG address exactly as sent, with no spaces before or after it.
- Save, then run an EPG update and wait for it to finish.
Switching from M3U to Xtream Codes is another easy fix: most apps pull the guide automatically with Xtream Codes, so there is nothing to paste. Our M3U vs Xtream Codes guide explains the difference and when each makes sense.
One more check: if your subscription has expired, the guide address stops working along with the channels. If nothing loads at all, confirm your expiry date and see how to renew without downtime.
The Guide Shows the Wrong Times
When the guide says a program is on but a different one is playing, the guide is usually shifted by a whole number of hours. Fix it in this order:
- Set the device time zone correctly. In the device's system settings, set date and time to automatic and choose your local time zone. US households in particular should check this after moving a device between rooms, homes, or networks.
- Check daylight saving time. If the guide was right for months and suddenly runs an hour off, the clocks just changed. A device set to automatic time handles this; a manual setting does not.
- Use the EPG time shift setting. Many apps, TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro included, have a time shift or time offset option for the guide. If the guide is always off by the same amount, set the offset to match (for example, minus one hour), then refresh the guide.
Some Channels Have No Guide Information
It is normal for a small number of channels to have no listings, because not every channel has guide data available. If a channel you watch often is missing its guide:
- Check whether the same channel has listings in another quality version (HD, FHD, 4K). Sometimes only one version is matched.
- In apps that allow it, you can manually link a channel to a guide entry. TiviMate, for example, offers this from the channel's options. Results vary, so treat it as a workaround.
- Send us the exact channel name as shown in your list. We can check its guide mapping on our side.
App-Specific Tips
TiviMate
In the settings, the EPG section lists your guide sources and lets you update them, change the update interval, and set a time shift. If you added an M3U playlist, add the EPG address here. Our TiviMate setup guide shows where it fits in the full setup.
IPTV Smarters Pro
With an Xtream Codes login, Smarters loads the guide automatically. If listings stop appearing, look for the option to refresh or reload the TV guide in the settings or on the live TV screen, and check the time format and time shift settings. See our IPTV Smarters Pro Smart TV guide for the initial setup.
Smart IPTV
Guide data in Smart IPTV depends on how the playlist was loaded and the app version. Our Smart IPTV app setup guide covers the playlist upload and where the guide fits in.
Low-powered devices
On older Smart TVs and basic streaming sticks, a full guide covering several days can strain the device's memory. Reduce the number of days the app keeps, hide channel groups you never watch, and update once a day instead of every few hours. If you use a Fire TV Stick, our guide to IPTV not working on Firestick covers storage and memory clean-up.
EPG Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Whole guide empty after first login | Guide still downloading | Wait five minutes, then refresh EPG |
| Whole guide empty with an M3U link | No EPG address set | Add the EPG URL from your welcome message, or use Xtream Codes |
| Guide was working, now empty | Failed update, full cache, expired account | Clear cache, refresh EPG, check expiry date |
| Guide off by exactly 1 hour or more | Time zone or daylight saving time | Automatic time, correct time zone, EPG time shift |
| A few channels show "No information" | Channel not matched to guide data | Try another version of the channel, report the name |
| Guide loads very slowly or app freezes | Large guide file on a low-memory device | Fewer days, hide unused groups, daily updates |
| Catch-up missing or plays wrong show | Guide empty or shifted | Fix the guide first, then retry catch-up |
When to Contact Support
If you have refreshed the guide, checked the time zone, and added the EPG address, and the guide still will not load, message us with your device, the app and version, how you signed in (Xtream Codes or M3U), and a photo of the guide screen. If the problem is a specific channel, include its exact name. You can reach us on WhatsApp or through the contact page.
Channels themselves not loading, or showing a login error? That is a different problem: use our Xtream Codes and M3U error checklist. And if you are new to IPTV and want the bigger picture of how guides, playlists, and apps fit together, start with what IPTV is and how it works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my channels play but the TV guide is empty?
Channels and guide data come from two separate sources. The streams can work perfectly while the guide file has not been downloaded yet, has no address set, or failed to load. Refresh the EPG in your app, wait a few minutes, and if it stays empty, add the EPG address from your welcome message.
Why is the TV guide one or more hours off?
Almost always a time zone mismatch. Check that your device's date, time, and time zone are set correctly, ideally to automatic. If the guide is still offset by a fixed number of hours, use the EPG time shift or time offset setting in your app to correct it.
Why do only some channels have guide information?
The app matches each channel to guide data using an ID in the playlist. Channels without a matching entry show no listings. This is normal for some channels; if a popular channel you watch is missing its guide, send us the channel name and we will check it.
How often should the EPG update?
Once a day is plenty for most people. Guide data usually covers several days ahead, so a daily update keeps it current. Updating far more often uses memory and data on low-powered devices without much benefit.
Does catch-up need the EPG to work?
In most apps, yes. Catch-up is usually opened from past programs in the TV guide, so if the guide is empty or shifted, catch-up can look missing or play the wrong program. Fix the guide first, then try catch-up again on a supported channel.
